Presentation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is a <strong>traffic calming measure<\/strong>, usually associated with other measures of this kind (for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/boost.up.pt\/en\/roadmap\/measures-selection\/velocidade-limitada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>Limited speed areas<\/u><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/boost.up.pt\/en\/roadmap\/measures-selection\/deflexoes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>Horizontal and vertical road deflections<\/u><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/boost.up.pt\/en\/roadmap\/measures-selection\/reducao-largura\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>Road narrowing<\/u><\/a>). This measure intends to<strong> reduce car connectivity to levels lower than the remaining transport modes<\/strong>. It usually originates from the need to accommodate the interests of different transport modes in a limited public space, resulting in the restriction of certain trip choices for the car in order to allow non-motorized transports to have more space, safety and greater access than the car. This leads to greater trips or less direct routes (with unintuitive turns) for the car..<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Objectives<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Redistributing public space to give greater priority to non-motorized transports.<\/li>\n<li>Creating safe zones for pedestrians and cyclists and discouraging car use in urban centres.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Measure&#8217;s importance<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Restricting car use, when allied to the facilitation of walking and cycling, provides comfort and safety to cycling and creates an efficient and attractive environment to the remaining transportation means. After a few years, the extra signals can be removed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Monitor citizens&#8217; adaptation to changes and reformulate measures to respond to users&#8217; needs, without compromising sustainable ideals (See <a href=\"https:\/\/boost.up.pt\/en\/roadmap\/measures-selection\/gestao-monitorizacao\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>Management, monitoring and maintenance<\/u><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Explain the principles behind the measures taken so that their need and functioning are clear (See <a href=\"https:\/\/boost.up.pt\/en\/roadmap\/measures-selection\/informacao\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>Information<\/u><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.
