Through the VEB tool, it is possible to verify the economic value of environmental and energy impacts, and the health benefits associated with the modal distribution on Portuguese municipalities.

The values presented for the environmental and energy impacts are based on the 2011 Census - Resident population by main means of transport and according to the journey length from place residence to place of work or study.

Health Benefits
The values presented for health benefits are based on the 2011 Census - Resident employed population by main means of transport and according to the journey length from place of residence to place of work. The economic health benefits are an estimated average of annual benefits (per cyclist; per trip; and total annual benefit) due to reduced mortality as a result of cycling).

By clicking on the map, it is possible to obtain detailed values for each municipality and see the differences on the economic value linked to a potential increase in bicycle use between 2011 (2011 census) and 2021 (ITDP)¹ The ITDP Scenario, establishes an increase of 0.2 percentage points per year (representing a 2.02% increase in the modal share of the bicycle in 10 years). For the environmental and energy indicators, it is possible to carry out simulations, and to establish different scenarios, by introducing the modal share of the bicycle and observe the changes in costs (€) associated with the value inserted.
